Why Join A Choir?
by Megan McDonald

Being in a choir is a great experience. Singing in a choir gives me the opportunity to perform, as well as learn, cultural songs in many different languages. I like the fact that while performing, we wear classic concert dress attire, including long black gowns with beaded bodices for the women and tuxedos for the men. I have had the amazing opportunity to travel and perform locally, regionally, and even internationally. Being in a choir helps enhance sight- and note-reading skills, and promotes the control and blending techniques required when singing in a large group. Harmonizing is the best part. When more than one vocal part is sung at the same time and it all comes together, a huge blended sound is heard and the audience wants to keep listening.

Choir Girls
Being in a choir is a great experience.

When younger kids move up from the choir level below, the stronger singers have to hold back sometimes and help the less experienced. Sometimes the extra attention on the younger kids can be irritating because it takes up a lot of rehearsal time. A way to get around this dilemma is to practice with other kids in between rehearsals. This gives the younger kids someone to talk to, teaches the older kids patience, and keeps the director in a good mood. The whole choir experience is memorable to everyone involved. You can learn so much by actually participating yourself! So if you come across a local choir, why not audition? Coming from me, I know you won’t regret auditioning!  Join a choir; all you need is ambition and a voice! -- M.M.
